Northern New Jersey Warblers - A Day Outing

Photographed on May 14, 2018

This was one of my most incredible days of wildlife photography and by far my best day for songbirds.  I planned a trip to scout a lot of locations all over northern New Jersey to find and photograph a variety of warblers.  I had a bunch on my list but never really expected to first find them all and second get nice photos of them all.  Unbelievably I was able to find every species on my list as well as add a few non-warbler songbirds which was nice.  I started the morning with the incredibly striking Golden-winged Warbler.  I had only gotten ok photos of them the previous year so I spent a good amount of time with them this spring and walked away with a nice variety of this wonderful species.  I then started driving south of where I had started and stopped at many different locations searching for specific species of warbler, getting photos and then moving along.  I ended the day in a location where last year I had seen Cerulean Warblers and again not gotten great photos.  Sure enough I showed up this year and there were a few around, I waited for the sun to dip below the nearby mountain and give me soft light and started working with these tough warblers.  I got a few upgraded photos of the species as well as a nice chance with  Red-eye Vireo.  Overall I ended up with photos I was happy with of 10 warbler species and 2 additional songbirds species.  I was exhausted but it was well worth the effort.  I can't wait to try a day like that again next year and if you are interested in joining me I have a workshop available to do just that!

Nature photography has become a very passionate hobby of mine and whenever I get a chance I love to get outside and enjoy being outdoors. I am also the co-owner of KGM Expressions, a wedding and portrait photography business, with my wife Kim. This is how we make our living and I love that we get to do that together.
