Join me to photograph Egrets and a variety of other shorebirds as they migrate south for the winter.  This location is a prime stopover for shorebirds and a simply beautiful location to photograph them in.  With bright green grasses and wide open spaces the lighting can be incredible here. With some patience and a bit of luck you will have bird walking right next to you and filling the frame while egrets dance around the shallow ponds chasing fish. This is a wonderful way to wrap up the warm season and say goodbye to the summer birds in southern New Jersey.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

  • Egrets and shorebirds wading in the shallows searching for food.  Egrets and Yellowlegs may catch small or large fish, smaller shorebirds will be probing the mud for aquatic insects and worms
  • A good variety of shorebirds mix together at this location
  • To get proper low angles you will be getting wet and very muddy.  Hopefully the weather will be warm enough so that won't be an issue.
  • On a clear day this location provides wonderful opportunity for front, side and backlit photos without moving.
  • You will be laying prone on the ground or in shallow water and not moving for long periods of time, be prepared and able to sit motionless for a couple hours so the birds will approach close.

PREPARATION:

  • Lenses from 300mm to 600mm recommended
  • A ground pod or tripod that can be positioned very low to the ground is ideal for this location.
  • A right angle viewfinder is ideal to save your neck while shooting prone for long periods of time
  • As mentioned this is a very wet area, you will have the option to lay on dryer land but that will not provide the best angles and limits your lighting options.  The ideal location will be laying prone in an inch or two of water and mud so wear appropriate clothing to do so and bring a change of clothes for your drive home.

WHAT I WILL PROVIDE:

  • Professional tips and suggestions how to achieve clear, sharp and well composed photos of the egrets and shorebirds.
  • Suggestions how to take advantage of the different lighting conditions
  • Suggestions how to allow the shorebirds and egrets to approach closely to you
  • Answers to any questions about shorebird photography or camera settings.
